The airport: Lihue (LIH)
Lihue is the only commercial airport on Kauai. It's small — two baggage carousels, no jetways on most gates (you walk down stairs onto the tarmac), and security lines that rarely exceed 20 minutes. Plan to arrive 90 minutes before a mainland flight, 60 minutes for inter-island.
Rental car shuttles run from the curb outside baggage claim. There is no Uber/Lyft queue worth waiting in — book the rental car before you fly.
Direct flights from the mainland (2026)
As of 2026, these mainland cities have non-stop service to LIH at least seasonally:
Year-round daily: Los Angeles (LAX) on American, Delta, Hawaiian, United. San Francisco (SFO) on United and Hawaiian. Seattle (SEA) on Alaska and Hawaiian. Phoenix (PHX) on American.
Mostly daily: Oakland (OAK) on Hawaiian and Southwest. San Diego (SAN) on Alaska and Southwest. Denver (DEN) on United (seasonal frequency).
Seasonal/limited: Portland (PDX) on Alaska. Salt Lake City (SLC) on Delta. Dallas (DFW) on American (winter).
Schedules shift every quarter. Confirm on the airline site within 90 days of travel.
Connecting through Honolulu
If you're east of Denver, you're almost certainly connecting through Honolulu (HNL). Hawaiian and Southwest run inter-island shuttles every 30–60 minutes during the day; the flight is 35 minutes.
Build in 90+ minutes for the connection if you're changing terminals or airlines. HNL's inter-island terminal is a long walk from the main terminal. Mokulele also flies to LIH from HNL on smaller planes; cheaper but more cancellations.
When to book
The sweet spot is 3–5 months out for shoulder season, 5–7 months for summer and Christmas. Southwest releases its schedule in chunks — sign up for fare alerts on Google Flights and Going.com.
Mainland-to-LIH fares typically run $400–$700 round trip in shoulder season, $700–$1,100 in summer, and $1,000+ for Christmas. Inter-island HNL–LIH is $60–$150 one way.
Red-eyes and arrival logistics
Most mainland flights to LIH are daytime departures arriving early afternoon. Red-eyes from Hawaii to the mainland are the norm in the opposite direction.
If you land at 2pm, you can be in Poipu by 4pm with a grocery stop. If you land after 8pm, just check in and eat at the hotel — driving the unfamiliar highway at night isn't worth it.
Inter-island day trips
If you have an extra day, day trips to Oahu (Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head) or the Big Island (volcano) are doable via the 6am Hawaiian shuttle. Maui day trips work less well because the airport is far from the good parts.
Honest take: don't do this on a 7-day trip. Kauai has more than enough.
